University of Northern Iowa, commonly referred to as simply UNI, is a state-supported university located in Cedar Falls, which is a city in Black Hawk County, in the US state of Iowa, with a population estimated at a number of more than 36 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
UNI was officially founded in 1876, by legislators Edward G. Miller and H.C. Hemenway, and since then, it has been known under different names: between 1896 and 1909, it has been known as Iowa State Normal School, Iowa State Teachers College, between 1934 and 1961, since 1961 to 1967 as State College of Iowa, the current name being adopted in 1967.
UNI offers its students over 120 majors through 5 different colleges, being ranked 4th in the nation for the total number of students who study abroad, among master’s degree institutions, being constantly named one of the ‘’ Best in the Midwest’’, by the Princeton Review, also being named 2nd among top public comprehensive universities, by the U.S. News and World Report, for 12 consecutive years.
The athletic teams from UNI are known as the Northern Iowa Panther, who compete in the NCAA Division I in various sports, including in I-FCS for football, in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, as well as in the Missouri Valley Conference, for men’s and women’s basketball. Lately, the Panthers have experienced success in men’s basketball, in which they competed in the NCAA tournament for 3 consecutive years in 2004, 2005 and 2006, including in 2009 and 2010.
The list of notable UNI alumni contains resonant names such as Robert John Hibbs - Medal of Honor recipient, 1966, Vietnam war, Dorothy Jean Ray – anthropologist, Eddie Berlin - dominating football player in the Gateway Conference and the Tennessee Titans, Phyllis Somerville - film, theatre and television actress, Mark Steines - co-host of Entertainment Tonight, as well as several other people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
